Did you know that over five hundred billion cups of coffee are drunk every single year.
Wouldn’t it be boring if all this coffee tasted the same?
We often forget the effort that goes into our cup of coffee, so here are some thoughts on the difference in coffee types and quality.
Coffee is grown extensively in fifty-three countries and as our demand for different tasting coffee increases, more and more new regions are giving up production of their existing crops to produce the highly prized coffee bean.
It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the varieties of coffee available.
Not only does the coffee taste differ by the countries and regions where the beans are grown, any changes in weather also affects the flavour.
There are two main types of coffee bean, Arabica and Robusta.
The Arabica is a high quality coffee bean and is usually considered to be gourmet coffee. The Arabica has around half the caffeine content of Robusta and tends to have more mellow flavours and aromas. Nearly 3/4 of all coffee drunk is Arabica.
Robusta beans, although containing more caffeine than Arabica, tend to be of a lower quality and have a sharper flavour. However, some of the best espressos are based on the Robusta bean.
Obviously, there are other coffee bean varieties, but most drinks are made from the Arabica or Robusta bean, or a blend of the two.
The biggest factors affecting coffee flavour are where it’s grown and how it’s roasted.
Other important factors affecting the taste of your coffee are the roasting process and the skill of the coffee blender.
